For families with incarcerated loved ones, setting up an account on the Department of Corrections Inmate Visitor Visitation Systems (IVVS) is the first step in staying connected. You must set up an account to schedule video calls or in person visits – but the online process can be confusing and frustrating. Our helpline receives calls every day from people struggling to sign up, and we know this prevents too many people from maintaining vital connections.
That’s why we created a step-by-step video guide to help families navigate the sign-up process. By making this step easier, we hope more families will be able to visit their loved ones—strengthening bonds that are proven to make a difference.

This is the first in a new series of resources the Prison Society is developing to help families navigate the system and stay connected. We are committed to providing the tools and support needed to maintain these critical connections because we know just how much visits matter.
Research shows the benefits of staying connected while in prison go both ways. Multiple studies have found that people who receive more visits while incarcerated are less likely to commit a new crime or violate the conditions of their parole after being released. The DOC’s own 2022 report on recidivism in state prisons found that incarcerated people who received four or more visits per month had three-year recidivism rates (defined as re-incarceration or re-arrest) that were 20 percentage points lower than those who received no visitors.
In-person visits also promote a safer prison environment. Studies have found that rates of rule-breaking behavior and misconduct are lower among incarcerated people who receive visits.
In addition, research links visiting a parent in prison with improved self-esteem, fewer feelings of alienation from the incarcerated parent, and a reduction in school dropouts and suspensions.
